Maine Middle School Teacher Chosen to Participate in Arctic Expedition to Learn About Climate Change
GUILFORD, MAINE. May 9, 2019 — Novatus Energy LLC, and the Piscataquis Community Middle School are pleased to announce that Alden Gregory, a fifth and sixth-grade science teacher at the Guilford, Maine school has been selected to participate in the ClimateForce: Arctic 2019 program. This announcement was made at a school-wide assembly held Thursday, May 9, at 2pm.
“I am grateful to Novatus for this amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity. I believe this experience will make science more real for our students by bringing them face to face with the effects of climate change that are already impacting the arctic. Through this adventure, I hope to inspire students to think about the future of our planet, including how humanity can have a positive impact on our world.” Mr. Gregory stated. In June Gregory will be travelling with an international group of educators and leaders to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago north of the Arctic Circle, on a twelve-day sustainability and leadership expedition to witness and study the impacts of global climate change first hand. He will participate in guided explorations on land and sea in the region and attend leadership conferences and discussions to help him gain knowledge and experiences that he can bring back to his classroom and community.
Robert Swan, who created the ClimateForce 2041 organization and the ‘Leadership on the Edge’ program describes it as “a unique blend of leadership development, up-to-date climate change training, and sustainability education. We incorporate workshops on storytelling, writing, presentation, and public speaking to help guide you on your leadership journey.”
“We are proud to be able to support Mr. Gregory on this expedition. He is a dedicated educator and leader. His passion for bringing science to his students makes this a great opportunity for him and the community”, said Stacey Fitts, Director of Asset Management at Novatus Energy.
Lindsey Martinez, Chair of Novatus Energy’s Board of Directors, also will be participating in the expedition. “I am excited that Novatus Energy is able to sponsor Alden (Mr. Gregory) and am pleased that this experience will allow him to bring home first-hand knowledge about our changing climate and equip him with the tools he needs to share what he’s learned with his students.”
She continued, “Sharing such a unique experience will broaden our collective knowledge base and inform the actions we can both take to positively impact our communities when we return. Alden will be able to use what he’s learned to inform his school’s science curriculum while I will be able to share additional sustainability strategies with Novatus to inform our business plans.”
Anita Wright, Principle of Piscataquis Community Middle School offered the following thoughts on the announcement and opportunity, “Novatus is providing the children of S.A.D. #4 an amazing opportunity to be second-hand witnesses to the physical changes in our world. By inspiring one teacher, they are inspiring dozens of children for years to come.”
